Hi Everyone, today my post is on the subject of what are the requirements for the level of English needed to enter a University in the UK, Australia or the USA.
The requirements are pretty high for a very good reason which is for your benefit and for the University’s benefit, why?
If you are going to embark on a degree course of any kind in the UK, Australia or the USA it is obviously in your interest to be able to understand and write English well otherwise you will be very severely restricted in understanding what the lecturer has to say and indeed be able to write clearly when carrying out projects or exams.
Being able to speak well is also very important as you will have to communicate to your fellow students when working on group projects and presenting the findings of your group projects to your tutor.
If you struggle with your English there will of course be a high risk of failing your exams and therefore your degree which will not benefit you or the University.
Consequently, it is very important that if you are considering applying for a degree course in the UK, Australia or the USA in the future, the sooner you improve your English to the necessary standard the better.
The IELTS Exam
The most common requirement by most of the well recognised Universities in the UK, Australia and the USA is the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam. The IELTS exam is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration with over 2 million tests taken in the last year.
IELTS is the world’s proven English test and is one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 25 years ago, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today.
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment through more than 1,000 test centres and locations in over 140 countries.
Further information on the test may be found here where you will find the information you need to know.
If you want to live, work and study in the UK, Australia or USA then having passed the IELTS exam you will be accepted by universities in the UK, Australia and the USA subject to passing the exam at the necessary level for the University of your choice.
IELTS Pass Level
To find the pass level required for a particular university please go here
To find a centre where you will be able to take the IELTS exam go to the home page for the IELTS website and on the top right of the page you will see a search box titled ‘Find an IELTS test’ where you can enter UK or any other country to find the location of the nearest test centre.
There are various ways of course to learn English but the most convenient way is to do so online with a reputable and well recognised organisation. My review of one such organisation may be found by clicking here
If you require further information or any help or advice I would be pleased to assist you, just ask your question in the ‘Leave a Comment’ option, top left of this post.
I hope this post helps you to achieve your dream of entering a University in the UK or any other English speaking university.
